RIF'd

A (hopefully) limited edition candle series for the recently (or not so recently) laid off.

 

The Story Line:

In 2023, I was laid off. Not an unusual story by any means, and not my first layoff. I found it interesting that during this time, many companies chose to use the term RIF - Reduction in Force - as a softer acronym to the word layoff. It certainly didn’t feel any softer.

In speech, RIF sounds a lot like the words “rift” and “riffed” and it inspired me to make a candle series (and story) around the meaning of these words. ...Also we love a good homonym here at Pore Over Collective! A RIF is very much a rift, and going through a RIF often means improvising, or riffing, on life’s plans.

Meant to capture the feelings one experiences during a layoff, the story begins with a dark and moody (and smokey) candle, layered with sweet rose. It continues with a sea salt and woodsy scent, as you dive into uncharted territory and contemplate if you will ever feel like you are on solid land again. The story ends with an uplifting fragrance blend of gardenia, bergamot, and beachwood - knowing, however, not everyone’s journey follows such a hopeful path.
